Knots is a motion graphic piece that visually communicates the feeling of facing internal struggle through the metaphor of a knot tightening.
Knots Final Piece
Process
In this project, I wanted to push myself to try a style outside of my comfort zone. I was inspired by black and white line drawings and began to think of emotions being symbolized using knots. While I had an idea how to create this visual in Cinema 4D, I had some exploration to do in order to find a way to animate it in an expressive way.
Style Exploration
I ultimately landed on this black and white line-drawn style because I felt it conveyed the feeling of darkness that sometimes comes with anxiety and mental health issues. This would allow me an opportunity to invert the colors to conceptualize a recovery.
Motion Exploration
Determining the best way to animate this piece came though lots of exploration. I used X-Particles in Cinema 4D to decide if it was possible to create something that looked like a knot tightening. I knew that this might be challenging, but I was determined to convey that feeling.

This project pushed me out of my comfort zone in Cinema 4D. I approached this project from an experimental perspective. Rather than making something I knew I was capable of, I thought of something that I had no idea how to make. This allowed me to play and research a lot until I figured out the best method. I really loved working in this way, and it gave me confidence that I can create whatever I set my mind to.Audio Source
